Acoustic X, short for The Acoustic Experiment, is the brain child of drummer Dave Smith and guitarist and songwriter Gerrard McDonough. It's a softer side to the McDonough Band's hard, psychedelic punk persona that highlights the songwriting skill of Gerrard McDonough...a very high skill. McDonough's songs are 3 minute audio episodes of Leave it to Beaver or The Little Rascals or The Wonder Years. His songs are old Polaroids of simpler, more innocent times...not by year but by life itself. Everyone has the moments that Gerrard McDonough expresses in his art and everyone always has. His songs can also reach moments of deep reflection and remorse...they can as easily be a chapter of Death of a Salesman as they can be an episode of The Wonder Years.

There's two other corner-stones to Acoustic X. Robbie Kneeland and Chris Moore. Both of these great players are seasoned, veteran bluegrass/folk session players from Maine, Kneeland on mandolin and vocals and Moore on guitar and vocals. Together the quartet  epitomize the charm and community vibe of "back-porch picking" at the highest level. This is just about music for the sake of and love of making music together. It happens on a thousand porches a night from the mountains of West Virginia to the neighborhoods of East Nashville to the cabins of Maine. In a way it's a preservation of a dwindling tradition in America and at the same time it's a celebration of songs about less hectic times when everything wasn't so urgent. It's what draws us back to Acoustic X for a third time on The Extended Play Sessions. They always bring a guest player along. It could be someone who sat in on the Sunday Morning Sermon sessions, the band's debut album, or it could be someone who just fits the vibe. This time around it was guitar ace Sean Yadisernia to add some flavor and texture to the songs.

"Waiting Room Blues" is typical McDonough songwriting. Three and half minutes about being early for your doctor's appointment only to sit for an hour and think about how much life you just lost and will never get back. Everyone's been there...everyone will be there again but this time you can remember the song and how damn spot on it was!
